Final Ethnographic Project(20%) -This assignment qualifies as an official QEP Assignment
Your final ethnographic project will consist of two main parts: Part 1 will be a visual project (this will make up 25 points of your Final Ethnographic Project) This project is a digital visual presentation of your research throughout the semester. It can be composed on Prezi, PowerPoint, or YouTube. *If you have another digital format you’d like to request, email your instructor prior to the due date for permission. You will need to plan to present this digital project at the Celebration of Student Writing so you have all semester to research the library’s policy on renting iPads and Laptops if you do not have access to your own. CELEBRATION OF STUDENT WRITING: MAY 6TH (11:30am-1:00pm) If you have another class during this time frame you need to talk to your professor ahead of time to receive permission to attend the event. If your professor does not grant you permission have s/he email me and/or include me in the email (you can CC me) so I have documentation. This is the ONLY way a student will be allowed to miss the Celebration. Being scheduled to work is not a legitimate excuse- Plan ahead. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND THE FULL CELEBRATION WILL RECEIVE ZERO POINTS FOR THE VISUAL PART OF THE PROJECT
Part 1 in class- you will do a 3 minute presentation during week 15 (this will make up 10 points of your Final Ethnographic Project)
Part 2 will be an academic essay (this will make up 65 points of your Final Ethnographic Project) The written aspect of your final will be made up of the research you’ve conducted throughout the semester. It will be a combination of your Writing Assignments 1, 2, 3, and 4. You are allowed to use pieces from your previous papers but you will need to smoothly transition from one to the next (So don’t just copy and paste your writing assignments together and turn it in. That will get you a zero.) You will NOT include your full annotations in this essay, but you WILL quote all eight of your sources at least once throughout this paper (this means you will quote the source- not yourself). This final essay will: Have an introduction that clearly explains the purpose of this essay, presents the semester research question, along with your own research questions, includes an identifiable and arguable thesis statement, and discusses your methodology. Your paper will introduce and define all important terms used for this research, explain what ethnographic research is (WA1), introduce community that was researched, explain why this community was a good choice to research (WA2), detail your code of ethics (WA3), paint a thorough picture of your community including participants, artifacts, and the community itself (WA4), clearly present verbal and nonverbal literacies that exist and function within the community, introduce at least two examples of literacy practices and literacy events within the community, describe two ideologies that exist within the community and explain how at least one of those ideologies is communicated as an ideological literacy. This paper will conclude with you overall analysis of the research, discuss what surprised, intrigued, and disturbed you, expand on your expectations vs. your findings, and include a solid answer to all of your research questions. Length: 4500 words (apx 15 pages) Essay will include 8 quotes (one from each source from student’s Annotated Bibliography) Both parts of this final will be due on Friday May 6th by 5pm via email
ARTIFACTS: You will need to have 5 artifacts from your site for your CSW presentation. You will need to physically bring at least 2 of these artifacts (unless you have spoken with me, explained why you can't, and I have approved). You will/may present the other artifacts through photos in your digital presentation. If you can't get authentic photos of these artifacts you will need to creatively compromise. Through your presentation you should have descriptions of how each artifact acts as a type of literacy for your community. This is required.
